Our summer walking season is heating up! With the Willamette Valley Relay fast approaching, we have extended the registration deadline to June 20, 2007 to give any stragglers the chance to sign up! The relay is branching out this year to offer the Willamette Valley Half Relay as well as a brand new event - the
Willamette Valley 10K Walk/Run. This shorter event falls under the umbrella of the
Willamette Valley Relay for those walkers interested in a Saturday morning walk or run.
The 10K Walk/Run offers a competitive division and a "Walk Our Way" division if a stroll is more your style!
Our walking community is expanding! We are so pleased to have a walking report all the way from India, thanks to our Walk Club member, Caye Poe. Also spreading the word, my walking articles are now being profiled on www.active.com. Go check it out!

WHY YOU WALK - STORY FROM CAYE POE
Caye Poe of Dayton joined Wonders of Walking a year ago to train for the Portland Marathon. She did the marathon, and in December she and her husband John flew to India to teach at Kodaikanal International School. She'll return to Oregon this summer, but in the meantime sends this report on her race walking in India.

WVR CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Captain Tips for a successful relay!
Leg assignments. This is where your knowledge of what your team member’s skills and abilities is crucial. You will have to make decisions on who can do what at least a month before the race. Course map and leg maps are now online here.
Submit and update your pace times!!! The course is set up based on the times you submitted so it is very important for you to fine-tune all your pace times. Teams who arrive early to a staging area will have to wait for that staging area to be set up and for you to continue the relay. The time you wait will be added to your overall time. Please ask each of your team members to time a one-mile walk (4 times around a track). Please email in your updated pace times.
Cell phone request. This is to ensure we have a contact person, in the event of an emergency. Although we don’t anticipate having to use it, it will allow course officials to get a hold of you – just in case. Please email in two cell phone numbers for each team van.
