Letter from Judy

Greetings!

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Congratulations to those who participated in the Wonders of Walking Willamette Valley Relay (WVR). A journey of 135 miles is accomplished one step at a time, as team members take turns traveling the course.

Welcome to all our new WOW walk club members, now numbering 54!

WOW was organized 4 years ago with the mission of creating walking events for walkers by walkers. We celebrate the benefits of walking, the fun of walking, and sharing with others. Our event season begins in July with WVR, eases into fall with the Sisters Stride in September and finishes with Pumpkin Caper in October.

In 2006 the year-round WOW walk club was added to our ‘events.’

Our journeys can take different forms. Each day is a new beginning for us to take steps towards our goals, advocate for our health, connect with others, or perhaps sometimes, just getting through the day.

Our summer months are quickly passing, as the season changes at the end of this month. I hope you are taking advantage of being outdoors, enjoying the light breezes & the full moon of this month.

Happy Walking!

Judy

WALKING TIPS

Brisk walking one-half hour a day reaps benefits for your heart. Study finds people who exercise regularly really do live longer; a brisk half hour walk a day can keep the heart strong, extending life from 1.3 – 3.5 years longer.

*Archives of Internal Medicine, November 2005*

To get benefits from any form of exercise, it must become a long term habit. Any new habit is difficult to establish in the beginning, but it can be done with planning. Make physical activity fun! Focus on what you want. The time you spend exercising is an investment in today and your future.

*Consult with your physician before starting an exercise program. Especially if you have a history of injuries or medical conditions, are pregnant, or have a family history of heart disease.

*Plan exercise into your day. Make an appointment to exercise. You wouldn’t skip brushing your teeth or taking a shower.

*Set up a support network. Include those who will exercise with you, and those who will encourage you.

* Set realistic goals for both short and long-term time periods. A goal is an aim or purpose with a time line.

*Keep a log as a visual reminder of your accomplishments. This is your journey for a lifetime—ENJOY!

This article might allay some of your confusion about fish. Fish is a great source of lean protein but some athletes forget it is also a source of mercury and PCBs. Hopefully this article will help to find the balance!

THE 3RD ANNUAL WILLAMETTE VALLEY RELAY WAS AGAIN A GREAT SUCCESS!

As the sun started to peek across the horizon, teams lined up to begin their journey through the beautiful Willamette Valley. The weather cooperated this year and provided participants and volunteers a little breather from the heat of the past. But no one can recreate the beauty of the evening -- the cool breezes, clear skies, brilliant stars and a rising moon that would have excited any photographer.

"Just wanted to let you know what a wonderful event the Willamette Valley relay was. It was two of my friends' first time doing a relay and they can't stop talking about it. We are so looking forward to it next year. Keep up the good work”

                                                                 Robin Boespflug, first time participant
